Sarah’s Blog: Mauritius Revisited – The Road Trip

After a wonderful start to my return to Mauritius, the next leg of the journey involved deeper exploration of this stunning island with some colleagues and the superb Attitude Hotels.

A last-minute injury meant one of our group couldn’t join, leaving me as the unexpected driver of our hire car. I hadn’t driven abroad in years, so I was a bit anxious at first, but those nerves quickly disappeared.

Arranging car hire is a breeze - it was delivered right to our hotel, giving me a chance to practice in the car park before hitting the road. Navigating here was surprisingly easy with driving on the same side as the UK and Google Maps (or a good wingman!).

I’m a big fan of Attitude Hotels' ethos. They’re eco-committed, sustainability-focused, they and offer authentic Mauritian experiences within the comfort of your resort, all while giving back to and embracing the local community.

Lagoon Attitude

Our first stop was the 4* Lagoon Attitude, the flagship resort for sustainability in their portfolio and one of their adults-only hotels. Located on the edge of the Anse La Raie lagoon on the north coast, it’s perfect for watersports like paddleboarding, kitesurfing and kayaking.

If you prefer to stay active on land, there’s plenty to do, from padel and cycling to tennis, yoga, and beach volleyball. Or, if you’re in the mood to unwind, you can relax at the spa or enjoy a good book by one of the three swimming pools.

Their commitment to eco-responsibility extends into the 182 rooms, featuring furniture crafted by local artisans, décor made from recycled materials, and a design that reflects the natural surroundings.

I was impressed with the rooms - they’re light, spacious and comfortable, and are thoughtfully positioned around the resort, whether you prefer being close to the pool, the seafront or nestled among lush, tropical gardens.

Lagoon Attitude is also perfectly situated - just 10 minutes from the lively town of Grand Baie and 25 minutes from the capital, Port Louis - making it an ideal base for exploring the north of the island.

Paradise Cove

Next, we headed to Paradise Cove, a luxury boutique hotel under the Attitude umbrella. I’ve been booking couples, especially honeymooners, here for a while now, so I was thrilled to experience it for myself.

From the moment you step into the stunning, wonderfully scented lobby (always a sign of a great hotel!), you’re greeted with an air of comfortable luxury. Paradise Cove offers one of the island’s few private beaches, making it a perfect escape while still providing plenty of activities.

I was especially drawn to the ‘You & Me’ experiences - unique opportunities to create precious memories, like stargazing, private beachside dinners, sunset cruises and exploring local islands on your own private pirogue boat.

You can choose between half-board or all-inclusive, both of which offer dine-around options in the four restaurants. We had a delicious lunch at Peninsula Restaurant overlooking the lagoon, and even though our visit was brief, the fish curry I had was definitely memorable!

The Ravenala Attitude

For the best weather in Mauritius, they say 'west is best'. Our final stop on the northwest coast was The Ravenala Attitude, set in lush tropical gardens by the Lemon River and the protected Turtle Bay.

This 4* all-inclusive resort is a perfect choice for families. With a relaxed vibe and a fantastic kids club open until 10 pm, parents can enjoy a night off at one of the two adults-only restaurants. With nine restaurants and six bars, there’s something to satisfy every palate.

Attitude Hotels brings a unique twist to dining with their ‘All in, All out’ all-inclusive package, covering you from the moment you arrive until you leave. Plus, you can ‘dine around’ at other resorts for lunch or dinner.

Instead of traditional mini bars, you can stock up on your favourite tea, coffee and snacks at the bulk shop, all without any single-use plastics.

What I love most though are their ‘Otentik’ (authentic) experiences. Try local street food at the Taba J trucks, join a Mauritian family for dinner at their home, explore the resort bazaar for handcrafted souvenirs, or use the free app for self-guided walking and cycling tours.

We also enjoyed a cooking class at the Kot Nou restaurant, which serves classic Mauritian dishes. It was great fun and made for a tasty lunch before we spent the afternoon soaking up the sun.

Zilwa Attitude

On our final day, we visited the 4* Zilwa Attitude, a family-friendly hotel about 30 minutes from The Ravenala. The setting was once again stunning (is there anything else in Mauritius?), with breathtaking views from the lobby overlooking the bay and the adults-only infinity pool.

The real surprise came after our resort inspection: we got to spend the rest of the day on the private island, Gran Zil. A short boat ride across the bay brought us to a paradise of sun, crystal-clear waters, and a beach BBQ with more delicious food. It was the perfect end to the trip.

Mauritius really is an island for everyone. Here’s why:

Ideal for families

Safe and easy to explore, with beautiful, calm beaches and perfect weather that’s never too hot. It’s ideal for summer holidays with family-friendly hotels, most featuring complimentary kids’ clubs and plenty of activities.

Ideal for couples and friends

Perfect for honeymoons and romantic getaways, with luxurious hotels and exceptional service. Enjoy a mix of cultures with everything from local dishes to fine international dining. You can also visit local rum and tea producers or play a few rounds of golf on one of the island’s ten courses.

Ideal for adventure seekers

Despite its small size, Mauritius offers diverse landscapes. Explore the rugged east coast, dive and snorkel in protected marine parks, or go hiking and zip-lining in Black River Gorges National Park.
