In an era where sustainability is more often talked about than practiced, it’s inspiring to find a hotel group that truly embodies eco-friendly tourism.
During my last trip to Mauritius, I stayed at several Attitude Hotels and their dedication to preserving the island’s natural beauty while offering authentic experiences really stood out.
Over the years, they’ve evolved from a small collection of properties into a trusted brand, with eight distinctive 3* and 4* hotels, each offering something unique.
Lagoon Attitude
My journey began at Lagoon Attitude, their flagship resort for sustainability. Nestled on the north coast by Anse la Raie lagoon, this adults-only haven is perfect for both relaxation and adventure, with activities ranging from paddleboarding to yoga.
The rooms reflect their commitment to eco-responsibility, featuring locally crafted furniture and recycled décor.
What struck me most at Lagoon Attitude was their deep-rooted commitment to sustainability, which goes beyond just avoiding single-use plastics. From the moment you arrive, it’s clear that this is a place that truly values and respects the environment.
Of course, the beautiful beaches, bluer-than-blue pools and dine-around options are reason enough to stay, but it’s Attitude’s unwavering commitment to providing not just an unforgettable holiday but also making a positive impact on the local community, economy and environment that resonates.
For instance, the resort provides reusable Dopper water bottles, which you can refill throughout your stay, significantly reducing plastic waste. The rooms are furnished with locally made crafts, and you can visit the Bulk Shop to stock up on coffee, tea, sugar or snacks using reusable glass jars.
Fresh produce is sourced from local families like the Mayavens; local bands are given the spotlight to perform; and the spa uses 100% natural ingredients sourced from the island’s lush La Vallée de Ferney.
Otentik Experiences
One of the standout features of Attitude Hotels is their Otentik (authentic) experience programme, which invites guests to engage with local culture and environment in truly meaningful ways. Every activity deepens your connection to the heart of Mauritius.
Some of my favourites include:
Otentik Dinner
Have dinner with a local family - help prepare the meal, learn about the island from those who know it best and perhaps enjoy some live music or dancing, too.
One of the highlights of my trip was participating in a Mauritian cooking class at Kot Nou. Cooking local dishes, like grilled chicken with mango salsa, was not only delicious but also a wonderful way to learn about the island’s culinary traditions.
Otentik Discovery
Explore the vibrant street food scene in Port Louis. Attitude Hotels even has its own app to guide you through self-guided walking and cycling tours.
I highly recommend the walking tour of Port Louis for a taste of the best street food and a look at the city’s cool street art.
Marine Discovery Centre
For eco-conscious travellers, the Marine Discovery Centre at Lagoon Attitude is a must-visit. Staffed by friendly marine biologists, it offers a chance to learn about the island’s marine life and even participate in vital research projects, such as photographing humpback whales on a sustainable whale-watching excursion.
I’d also recommend booking a kayaking tour through the mangroves, following their snorkelling trail and joining one of their upcycling art classes!
Where to stay
Each of the eight Attitude Hotels has its own unique charm, but here are my personal favourites:
The Ravenala Attitude
Tucked away on the northwest coast, The Ravenala Attitude is an all-suite resort with something for everyone, whether you’re a family looking for space or a couple seeking romance.
It boasts beautiful pools, a stunning beach, and nine diverse dining options, including two adults-only venues.
With a range of activities, including a kids' club and a fitness trail along the river, it’s also conveniently close to Port Louis.
The sunsets here are simply breathtaking, but for me, the most memorable part was the sense of community fostered by the staff. From the moment I arrived, I felt like more than just a guest - I felt like part of a shared appreciation for the beauty and culture of Mauritius.
Sunrise Attitude
For a tranquil, adults-only retreat, Sunrise Attitude on the wild east coast is the perfect choice. Located opposite the stunning Belle Mare Beach, this hotel is all about reconnecting with nature and yourself.
The décor, featuring earthy tones and natural materials, complements the serene environment, creating an ideal setting for relaxation.
With no TVs, swim-up rooms and private pool villas, it’s a haven for honeymooners and those looking to unwind.
Start your day on the beach with headphones on, as the DJ’s beats sync with the rising sun – dance, relax or simply soak in the energy of a new day.
The dining experience is equally enchanting, offering a variety of delicious dishes, including authentic street food and vegan options, all in beautifully designed spaces perfect for unwinding.
